Warning: tado° X devices are not compatible with earlier product lines.
tado° X and V3+ use different technology platforms, despite offering similar functionalities. tado° X is not compatible with earlier tado° devices, so you can’t use them together in the same Home in the tado° app. However, you can use both product lines with the same tado° user account. You’ll need to create a separate Home for each product line to manage tado° X and V3+ devices separately, as explained below.
tado° X devices can, however, work together with the Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) and Wireless Temperature Sensor X (2nd gen).
What is the difference between tado° X and earlier products?
tado° X and V3+ use different technology platforms, despite offering similar functionalities.
tado° X uses the Thread protocol to communicate between devices.
using Thread creates a mesh network that allows multiple tado° X Thread border routers to be added if you are already using a tadoº Thread network, extending the range in large spaces. Prior tado° product lines only allowed one Internet Bridge per home.
The Smart Thermostat X, Wireless Temperature Sensor X, and Smart Radiator Thermostat X are Matter-enabled and can communicate with non-tado° devices that are also Matter-enabled.
V3+ tado° products provide very reliable heating control and are compatible with a wide variety of heating setups, including boilers from many different manufacturers.
Compared to the V3+ range, tado° X products are compatible with a smaller array of modulating boilers.
I already have tado° products. Can I add a tado° X device?
tado° X devices can’t be added to setups that use V3+ and prior. tado° X devices can’t communicate with earlier tado° products, as they use different technology platforms and communication standards. You can’t therefore use tado° V3+ and tado° X devices in the same home.
How can I switch to tado° X?
There are a few considerations to bear in mind when replacing your existing tado° setup with a set of tado° X products.
Before installing a tado° X setup, you will need to create a new Home in the tado° app. You can use the same tado° account and add all your tado° X devices to the new Home.
There is currently no copy-paste function to transfer settings like Smart Schedules, Energy IQ, and room data from your V3+ account to your new one. You will need to manually re-enter these details.
Register and install your tado° X devices starting with one of the following:
a tado° Bridge X (included in our starter kits)
a supported Thread border router from another provider
Can I keep my Auto-Assist subscription when I switch to tado° X?
If you have an active subscription to Auto-Assist, you’ll keep your subscription benefits as long as you’re an Admin of the new tado° X Home.
Is my heating system compatible with tado° X?
tado° X offers high compatibility with heat pumps, thanks to the Heat Pump Optimizer X.
tado° X works with most boilers. The only requirement for tado° to work with your boiler is that it communicates in a language that tado° can understand and process.
One of the most common ways in which thermostats communicate with boilers is through simple relay (on/off) connections. The Smart Thermostat X is compatible with almost all boilers that support relay connections and modulating Opentherm connections. Compared to the V3+ range, tado° X products are compatible with a smaller array of modulating boilers.
If your Wired Smart Thermostat V3+ controls a non-Opentherm modulating boiler, tado° X may not be compatible with your heating system, even if you have earlier tado° products. Please contact tado° support to confirm compatibility. Tap the round orange icon to open a chat.
