tado° X products are compatible with home heating systems controlled by:

  • wired room thermostats

  • a boiler

    • with controller/receiver

    • without controller

  • radiators

  • a heat pump

The precise way tado° X controls your system depends on which heating system you have.

You’ll need different tado° X devices depending on which of the following setups you use.

1. You have a wired room thermostat

A wired room thermostat is typically mounted in the living area. It can be wired to the boiler, underfloor heating, a zone valve, or a heat pump. On the thermostat, you can set a target temperature. The thermostat compares the actual room temperature to the target temperature. Then it adjusts the heating accordingly.

A tado° Smart Thermostat X can replace most wired room thermostats. They have all the basic functions of a normal wall thermostat, and more. The Smart Thermostat works together with your other tado° X devices to make your system smarter.

2. You have a boiler controller

Boiler controllers are often located next to the boiler or elsewhere in your boiler room. Some examples for boiler controllers next to the boiler are:

  • Timers/Programmers: let you set fixed times for the central heating and/or the production of hot water.

  • Receivers: are wired to the boiler and work together with a wireless thermostat. The wireless thermostat measures the temperature in the room and sends it wirelessly to the receiver. The receiver controls the heating. The receiver can be installed outside or inside the boiler.

The tado° Wireless Receiver X can replace most of these boiler controllers and take over their functions. It controls the heating together with the Wireless Temperature Sensor X.

3. You have a boiler without a controller

If your boiler doesn’t have a controller, you’ll need to connect the tado° Wireless Receiver X to your boiler. You’ll need to install this next to your boiler. It works together with the Wireless Temperature Sensor X, which you can place in the living area where you want to measure the room temperature.

4. You have radiators

Radiators are typically situated throughout the home, often one per room, supplied by central or district heating. They can be connected to a zone valve, a boiler, or a heat pump. On the radiator head, you can manually set a target temperature.

The tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat X can replace your existing radiator heads, making your radiators smart, and allowing them to work together with a tado° Wireless Temperature Sensor X or Smart Thermostat X.

5. You have a hydronic heat pump

If you have a compatible heat pump, the tado° Heat Pump Optimizer X makes your heat pump smart, so you can control functions and schedules from the tado° app. You don't need to remove your existing heat pump controller, because you'll still use it for cooling.

The Heat Pump Optimizer X can work independently or together with tado° room control devices.

You can also subscribe to tado° Balance for Heat Pumps, which automatically shifts energy consumption to lower-cost periods.
