Your tado° X setup requires a Bridge X or alternative Thread border router. The Bridge X is the device that enables communication between tado° X devices and is included in our Starter Kits.

The Bridge X is interchangeable (as a Thread border router) with any of the following devices:

  • tado° Wireless Receiver X

  • Apple Home Hubs, such as:

    • HomePod (2nd generation)

    • HomePod mini

    • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or 3rd generation 128 GB)

Not all Apple TV models support Thread. Whether a model includes this feature depends on Apple’s design choices, and tado° doesn’t have control over that.

The following table shows which Apple TV models are compatible with Thread:

To extend the range of your network, you can add multiple Thread border routers, including the tado° Bridge X.

Adding tado° devices to a non-tado° Thread border router

You can add the tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat X, tado° Smart Thermostat X, and tado° Wireless Temperature Sensor X to a Thread border router from a different Smart Home system.

When you do so, you can install and control these devices via the tado° app and via the other Smart Home system’s platform. Currently, this is possible with:

  • Apple Home Hub: Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or 3rd generation 128 GB), HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini

Adding other Thread-enabled devices to a tado° Thread network

Thread-enabled devices like lights, thermostats, outlets, sensors, and more can be connected to your home network via tado° Bridge X, tado° Heat Pump Optimizer X, or tado° Wireless Receiver X. However, they can’t be controlled via the tado° app. They will need to be controlled either on the vendor's app or a Smart Home platform.
