If your tado° X devices periodically disconnect, these are the key ways you can improve your Thread network’s stability and range:

  • Reposition your Bridge X, especially to a more central location between tado° X devices and near your router.

  • Add another Bridge X to your home to avoid gaps in your Thread network.

  • Add a Thread router from another manufacturer to your home.

Remember that walls and floors can affect network range, especially if devices on an underground floor are trying to communicate with your router or other tado° X devices on upper floors. To extend your Thread network’s range, you can add a Thread router to each floor, or on opposite sides of your home. To make your Thread network more stable, make sure there are no big gaps between your Thread devices.

It’s important to use the same mobile device to set up a new Thread device that you used to set up your existing Thread devices. Otherwise, there’s a chance that the new Thread device could create a new Thread network rather than extending the original one.

If your Thread border router is a tado° Bridge X

If your router is located far from the majority of your tado° devices (e.g. the attic), you can move your Bridge X to be somewhere between the router and the other devices. You can also add another Bridge X to minimize the gap in your Thread network.

If your Thread border router is a tado° Heat Pump Optimizer X

If your heat pump is located in an underground floor, garage, or is similarly separated from your central home, the range of your Thread network may need to be extended from the Heat Pump Optimizer X to the rest of your home. In this case, adding a Bridge X between your Heat Pump Optimizer X and your other tado° devices and/or your router will strengthen the Thread network.

Your Heat Pump Optimizer X also relies on input from your Wi-Fi network. If it has trouble maintaining a stable Wi-Fi connection with your router, consider adding a Wi-Fi extender to your home setup.

If your Thread border router is a tado° Wireless Receiver X

If your boiler is located in the basement, the range of your Thread network may need to be extended from the Wireless Receiver X to higher floors. You can add a Bridge X in the middle between your Wireless Receiver X and your tado° devices and/or your router to strengthen the network.

If your Thread border router is a smart home hub from another manufacturer

Compatible Thread border routers from other manufacturers should work interchangeably with tado° Thread border routers. You can refer to our smart home integrations articles for help setting up tado° with Alexa, Apple Home, and Google Home, or you may need to check with your smart home manufacturer’s customer support for product-specific troubleshooting.

You can also try adding a Bridge X to your setup. You can strategically place the Bridge X either between your smart home hub and your tado° devices in order to strengthen the Thread network, or at the outer edge of your Thread network in order to expand the range.
