Previous tado° thermostats had dedicated Normally Closed (NC) terminals, which allowed different wiring options.
The Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) has only a Normally Open (NO) relay terminal, so you can configure the relay behaviour in the tado° app using Relay Mode instead.
Relay Mode is available only when:
You use a tado° Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen).
Your heating system is controlled by a relay (on/off).
The Interface Type is set to Relay in the tado° app.
During installation, the tado° app guides you to the correct Relay Mode for your heating system. You can change this setting later in your device settings if required, as explained below.
How to change Relay Mode?
Open the tado° app.
Go to Settings > Rooms & Devices.
Select your Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen).
Select Relay Mode.
Choose the relay setting.

Relay Mode options
Default (NO - Normally Open)
This is the default setting and is the correct option for most relay-controlled heating systems.
When your thermostat calls for heat, it provides power to the heating system.
NC - Normally Closed
Only choose this option if your heating system requires a Normally Closed (NC) terminal.
With this setting, the thermostat provides power to the system when there is no call for heat.
Important: Do not select NC - Normally Closed if your thermostat is connected directly to a boiler. This may prevent your heating system from working correctly.
NC relay control is usually required only for some specific underfloor heating systems.
