Hydronic Balancing helps your heating system distribute heat more evenly throughout your home.
It automatically adjusts the flow of hot water between your radiators so that each room can reach its target temperature more consistently. This helps prevent rooms close to the boiler from getting too warm while rooms farther away stay too cold.
You can use Hydronic Balancing if:
Your home has its own boiler or heat pump.
You have an AI Assist subscription.
You have a tado° Smart Radiator Thermostat X on every radiator you use for heating. Radiators that are permanently turned off and never used for heating don’t need a tado° device.
How do I turn on Hydronic Balancing?
To turn on Hydronic Balancing:
Open the tado° app.
Go to Settings > Hydronic Balancing.
Toggle Hydronic Balancing on.
You can turn it off again at any time.
How does Hydronic Balancing work?
Many heating systems are set to a high pump speed to make sure all radiators receive enough hot water. After you turn on Hydronic Balancing, you may be able to gradually reduce the pump speed. This can reduce the sound of water flowing through your radiators.
Please note: When Hydronic Balance is turned on, it runs automatically whenever your heating is on. It doesn't appear as a separate symbol on the screen of your Smart Radiator Thermostat X.
How else can I optimise my heating system?
Hydronic Balancing optimises how hot water is distributed between your radiators. You can also optimise other components of your heating system to improve efficiency.
Depending on your heating system, ask a qualified heating professional to:
Adjust the heating curve: Set the flow temperature to match your building’s actual heating needs. If only a few rooms require higher flow temperatures, installing larger radiators may allow you to lower the overall heating curve.
Check the circulation pump: Make sure the pump is correctly configured and meets current efficiency standards. Replacing an older, inefficient pump may also reduce electricity consumption.
Set a night setback directly on your boiler controller: This reduces the flow temperature overnight, when your home usually needs less heating.
These measures work together with Hydronic Balancing and can help you get more efficiency from your heating system while maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature.
Please note: If you’re applying for BAFA funding in Germany, you must also carry out these additional heating-system optimisation measures.
