What is the heat curve and how does it work with heat pumps?

The heat curve (or heating curve) is a setting on your heat pump that adjusts the water flow temperature based on the outdoor temperature. When it’s cold outside, the heat curve increases your heat pump's water flow temperature to keep your home warm. When it’s warmer outside, the heat curve reduces the water flow temperature to save energy.

Setting the right heat curve is essential for maintaining a high Coefficient of Performance (COP). A well-adjusted heat curve lets your heat pump use less energy while keeping your home comfortable. If set too high, it wastes energy; if set too low, it may not heat your home effectively, causing discomfort.

How can tado° help me optimize the heat curve?

With a tado° Heat Pump Optimizer X and Heating Optimization, you can adjust your heat curve’s settings to save energy and improve your heat pump’s efficiency.

Under Heating Optimization, you can find the following options:

  • Comfort: warms your home faster by reaching the desired temperature quickly.

  • Standard: your heat pump’s initial setting.

  • Moderate (Energy Savings ~ 4%): slightly extends warm-up time, saving some energy.

  • Eco (Energy Savings ~ 7%): further extends warm-up time, prioritising energy savings over speed.

  • Eco Plus (Energy Savings ~ 11%): maximises energy savings by significantly extending warm-up time.

Please note: the availability of these options depends on your initial heat curve setting (e.g., if your heat curve is already set to the minimum, some options won’t be available).

How to use tado° Heating Optimization:

  1. Open the tado° app and go to Settings.

  2. Select Heat Pump.

  3. Select Heating Optimization and choose the setting that best suits your needs.

By adjusting the heat curve with tado°, you can save energy while keeping your home comfortable.
