How do I know how often tado° turns my heating system on and off?

You can see how often tado° asks for heat from your heating system in the Climate Report in your tado° app. 

To do so, tap on the heat request button in the Climate Report. The times when tado° called for heat are then shown in the Report in different shades of grey.

What does heat request mean?

Heat request refers to the amount of heat tado° is asking for from your heating system to reach and maintain the target temperature. 

The amount of heat tado° asks for is shown by the heat request symbol as a number of wavy lines:

  • 3 is a high heat request

  • 2 is medium 

  • 1 is low

  • 0 is off

The current heat request per room is shown by the heat request symbol in the respective Room Screen.

To see how the heat request in that room has changed over time, just tap, hold and slide along the Climate Report curve. 

The heat request depends on several factors like the previous and current room temperatures, your building’s characteristics, the weather and your heating system type. 

For instance, for radiator-controlled rooms, Smart Radiator Thermostats manage the heat request directly through the radiator valve. tado° controls when and how much the valve should open to reach and maintain the target temperature in the room. 

For relay systems, the heating system turns on (100%) or off (0%) completely for specific time cycles based on the heat request. 

And for digital heating systems (e.g. OpenTherm/eBUS), based on the heat request, the heating system modulates the heat it supplies to reach and maintain a specific temperature. 

Why is there a delay between the heat request and the relay click?

In most cases this delay is normal because tado° prevents your heating from switching on and off too frequently to protect the boiler from excessive wear and tear. This is also more efficient in terms of energy usage . Otherwise the delay could be related to radio connection issues between tado° devices.
